The two important terms to know are
entry: the thing you want to remember
topic: how you want to file/categorize that entry

Let's say you are making a list of books to read. The best way to do it is to send:

Books
In Search of Lost Time
  

The first line, Books, tells me the topic to put the information under.
The second line, In Search of Lost Time, becomes an entry within Books. You can then add other books as you think of them.

The topic is limited to a few words. If you really need more, please use underscores or hypens, e.g., My_Long_Topic_Name. Each entry within a topic, however, can record up to 10,000 characters.
You could store an entire novel under one topic with just 50 entries!
